Carolyn Porter is a graphic designer and self-professed typography geek who designed P22 Marcel Script. Released in 2014, this font has garnered four international honors, including the prestigious Certificate for Typographic Excellence from the Type Directors Club, typeface competitions by Communication Arts and Print magazines, and was a selection for the 2015 Project Passion exhibition. P22 Marcel Script is based on the handwriting of World War II French forced laborer Marcel Heuzé. While imprisoned in a labor camp in Berlin, Marcel wrote letters to his wife and young daughters back home in France. The letters, stained and scarred with censor marks, were filled with messages of hope and love, along with testimony of survival inside the camp. Carolyn’s obsessive quest for information on Marcel’s fate is the subject of the award-winning book Marcel’s Letters: A Font and the Search for One Man’s Fate (Skyhorse, 2017).
